Altec Utility Cabinet

Hi!

I?m sure you all know the picture of John Lennon beside an Altec-Monitor at AbbeyRoad-Studio.

That?s a cabinet that?s look i like very much since i saw one in the 60?s.

Can anybody tell if it would suit a 604E in a good way? Of course i know it can?t produce any kind of deeper bass - but what does it to the upper bass and lower mids!?

I don?t know - and didn?t find precise informations - what kind of 604 it usually housed?
What i know is, AbbeyRoadStudios switchged to Tannoys from around ?68 or so because they didn?t like the treble of the 604. Who knows - i for myself used Tannoys over 10 years and i would never switch back again after listening to the 604E in 620 Cabinets.
I like them especially because of the treble . . . :-)

I found it here in the forum.

And i found an answer from Steve Mac:

"It was the 605 that EMI qualified for monitoring."

In an Altec-paper i read of the 604E to use in this cabinet . . i guess it?s too small, isn?t it? Think it?s a 612.

Yes acording to those who red the book it was a 605 in a 612 cabinet. The 604 super E
was also very popular with recording studios at that time also in a 612 cabinet.

I'll try to fix that picture.

OK, wasn't sure if that was the one. Anyway, either adding a bit of LF boost or some baffle step compensation and shelving the HF a bit more will in theory turn it into a slightly better sounding version of the 605. That, or drive it with a high output impedance amp similar to those the original duplexes were 'voiced' with.

Hi GM!

Thanks for your reply. At the moment i use an AudioResearch D76A - which isn?t too bad with the speakers and an updated N1500A (just replaced parts - no phasecompensation) - and two switching-amps with internal xover-option using a DSP (and time-delay).
Also i use experimentally 2 EV XEQ2 (using time-delay) with the switching-amps.
That runs very well - but i was just attracted by this cabinet . . . :-)

What i always read is to stay at least with the volume of the 620 cabs - maybe i?ll apply the look of the 612 to the 620 . . ;-))
